Protecting the Privacy of Kids Online
Student
publishing sites assume that any pictures and/or text submitted to the
web site have been reviewed and authorized to be placed online. In
general, they
will not include students' last names or other personal information with
the writing that they post. Just like Story Book, each site has
submittal guidelines specific to that site and many have
posted or linked information on
COPPA (Children's Online Privacy
Protection Act).
What
is COPPA? It is a law designed to protect the privacy of
kids online. Under this law, which took effect on 4/21/00, commercial
World Wide Web sites and online services are prohibited from
collecting personal information, such as e-mail addresses, from
children under 13 years of age without verifiable consent from parents
or guardians. Sites must maintain the confidentiality, security,
and integrity of information collected from children.
