The Poisson Distribution

Related Example

The Learning Resource Center at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, IL serves as an excellent resource for students, faculty and community members. The Research and Planning department of the college has determined that customers at the checkout desk are serviced at the rate of 10 customers per minute between the hours of 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm. In an effort to insure the quality of service and improve staffing, an analysis shows that the criteria for a Poisson process are met: the occurrences are random and uniformly distributed over the interval, and the occurrences are independent of each other. The following will be determined:

The probability that exactly 3 people will be serviced at the checkout desk in one minute during that time.

The probability that less than 6 people will be serviced at the checkout desk in one minute during that time.

The probability that at least 5 people will be serviced at the checkout desk in one minute during that time.
