Purpose of Today's Workshop
Today's workshop will introduce participants to several real time data and collaborative projects that focus on science and mathematics. Emphasis will be on learning how real world data can be effectively incorporated into traditional learning exercises. Participants will also discuss the preparation, implementation, and assessment aspects of incorporating an Internet-based activity into the classroom. Finally, a wealth of compelling projects and resources in the areas of oceanography, meteorology, geology, environmental science, and mathematics will be examined.Examples of Compelling Science and Math Projects
- Musical Plates - Learn about earthquakes and plate tectonics.
- The Global Sun/Temperature Project - How does proximity to the equator affect average daily temperature and hours of sunlight?
- The Stowaway Adventure - Use real time data from ships at sea to find your speed and direction and to ultimately find your way home.
- The Wonderful World of Weather - Lots of weather lessons incorporating real time weather information.
- The Gulf Stream Voyage - Investigate ocean currents and weather of the Gulf Stream.
- The International Boiling Point Project - What makes water boil?
- 1999 The Noon Day Project and CIESE developed Lesson Strategies - Measure the circumference of the earth.
