Working with the Discussion Area

Entering the Forum

1) When you enter the discussion board site, you should see an interface that looks similar to the Global Water Sampling Project below:

Each separate listing in boldface, is what we will call a “Forum”. Depending upon which project you entered, there may be several different forums in which you will post specific information.

i.e. Only letters of introduction go in the “Letter of Introduction” area.

Click on the bold faced title of the forum to enter.

Posting a Message

1) Once you click on one of the “forums” you will see a list of titles for all the messages that have been posted to that forum so far.

2) To post your own message, click on “New Message”.

3) The next screen provides an area for you to type your
message. The required fields are the “From Box”, where
you can type your name, the “E-mail” box, where you
will type your valid e-mail address, and a “Subject” for
your message, which will be see when others first enter
the discussion forum.

The large box below these fields, is where you will type
the content of your message.

You may also need to add an attachment to the message,
such as a word document, or spreadsheet. To do this,
click on the browse button to search your computer, and
select the file. (* this may not be available on all projects)

Once you have completed your message, click the “Send”
button.

4) The next screen will show your message to you. You can click on “Back to Forum”, at the bottom of the message to
return to the forum.

Replying to a Message

1) The method for replying a message is similar to posting a new message.

2) Click on the forum you wish to enter. Find the message that you would like to respond to, and click on it.
(you may also respond to another persons response). The next screen will show you details about the persons
message, along with the word “Reply” at the top. Click on “Reply”.

3) At this point, refer to step 3 for posting a message.

* Clicking on “Show whole thread”, is
a nice way of viewing all the replies to a
particular message.
