Aloha to all of the schools in the Global Water Project, from Castle’s Aloha Academy. We are a group of 90 10th graders who share the same teachers for 4 classes. We like surfing, skateboarding, reggae and Hawaiian music, hanging out with friends at the beaches and shopping malls, and chatting online.

Castle is a big school, with 2000 Knights, located on the windward side of the island of Oahu. In Hawaiian, the word “wai” means both water and wealth because ancient culture was organized around watersheds called “ahupua’a”. Being on the side facing the winds, we get more rain than other parts of the island, so it is very green and pretty here and we have many streams which empty into Kaneohe Bay nearby. We are rich in that way.

In biology we are studying ecology, how living things are connected to each other and to their physical environments. We started out experimenting on a species of native shrimp in jars in our lab, and are now investigating the conditions in Kawa Stream, which runs next to our school. We also took a field trip to the mouth of the stream where it meets the Bay, and tested the water quality there.

We look forward to comparing our data with yours. Mahalo (thank you)!
