Hi,
We are the seventh grade science class of Sacred Heart School in Hallettsville, Texas. Our school and church are named in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This name is a title of Jesus that signifies love.
Our school consists of about 300 students in grades Pre-K through 12. There are 18 students in our class. In our town of about 3,000 people, there are our Catholic school and a public school. In addition to our school work, we are involved in many activites. Currently, the boys are playing football and the girls are playing volleyball. Later in the year we will be participating in basketball, track, and softball. We will also be participating in academic meets and 4-H projects.
Hallettsville, located half-way between San Antonio and Houston in southeast Texas, is the seat of government for Lavaca County and has a beautiful, historic courthouse. Our town has a hospital, several restaurants, many churches, and many stores including a Wal-Mart.
The river we are studying, the Lavaca River, runs near the courthouse, right through the middle of town. Most of the time the river is not very deep, usually looking like a stream. There have been times when the river has flooded the town, most recently in August of 1981. Since that time the river has nearly flooded again. We think the water in the river is fairly clean although there could be chemical residues from agricultural activity.
We are looking forward to doing these experiments.
