Hello from Rogers High School:

The city of Rogers Arkansas is located in the Northwest corner of the state (latitude 36 degrees 19 minutes 25 seconds North, longitude 94 degrees 7 minutes 25
seconds West), and has a population of 34,267. Here at the high school, there are 2,016 students enrolled in grades 10-12. Of those, 440 are Advanced Placement
students and 350 of those are receiving credit through the community college or the University of Arkansas. There are 132 teachers, seven with Doctoral degrees,
and more than 55 with Master's degrees. Our campus covers a large area, with eight buildings where over 200 courses are taught. Nine AP classes are offered in a
variety of subjects, including Music Theory, Chemistry, European History, and Calculus.

We were the first high school in Arkansas to offer computer classes, and are the only high school in Northwest Arkansas to offer Latin courses. We also are hosts to
17 exchange students from 11 countries. Last year, our students contributed over 5,500 non-perishable food items during the Ten Days of Christmas, and
distributed them to area charities.

This year, students in Mr. Dark's Chemistry class sampled the water from Diamond Spring and from Lake Atalanta. Diamond Spring is a tributary of Lake Atalanta,
which in turn feeds Beaver Lake. Beaver Lake supplies the water for the entire Northwest Arkansas area, which includes more than 270,000 people and many
industries. One of the major industries is poultry. We would like to protect our water supply by monitoring pollutants such as nitrates and phosphates. Because there
are no poultry farms near our sampling sites, we do not expect to have very high levels of nitrate. However, there are many septic systems around that may be
releasing high levels of fecal coliform bacteria into Lake Atalanta and into Beaver Lake. We were not able to sample the water for bacteria this Fall, but hope to add
it to our tests in the Spring. We are looking forward to learning more about water quality throughout the world.
