Our school is Bigelow Middle School in Newton, Massachusetts. It is comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Newton is called the "Garden City" because we are very proud of our parks and gardens. It is a medium sized city and is located on the western border of Boston, MA and so we have opportunites to enjoy the offerings of a large city. The motto of our school is Respect, Responsibility, and Love of Learining. Our school population of about 500 students is a very diverse community with a representation of many different cultures. We are also a very democratic student body, electing a council of peers to represent us regarding school issues. There is a strong sense of community at Bigelow Middle School and there is a creative essence that fills every classroom as students eager to learn expand their growing minds.
We rotate our days on a six day schedule. Our day begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. Each day we have our core courses, math, science, English, social studies, and world language. World languages include French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. We also have physical education, consumer education, art, technology, and music rotated into our schedule. After school activities include yearbook, The Bigelow Beat newspaper, our own T.V. station, the bridge club, tennis club, woodworking club, computer design club, and drama club to name a few. Sports are also a very important part of the Newton community. We have soccer, cross-country, football, basketball, lacrosse, softball, baseball, and track. We really like to compete with other schools and our records our very good.
We are an environmentally conscious community that does its best to stop pollution. The water site that we will study is the Charles River. We will most likely be looking at water pollution and the chemical composition and will be starting our data collection in about one month. We are interested in comparing our results with communities around the world and seeing how our water systems fare against others. We look forward to hearing from you all soon.
