Our school is Kyneton Secondary College. Kyneton is in a rural district 80 kilometres North West of Melbourne, the capital city of the State of Victoria, Australia. In Victoria, Secondary Colleges (or High Schools) have students from Grade 7 to Grade 12 (ages 12 to 17 years). There are 750 students at our school. Our Grade 8 class is an elective unit called the 'Global Classroom.' We have been studying the habitat and water quality of our local river, the Campaspe River which flows north into the Murray River. The Murray River marks the border between the States of Victoria and New South Wales.
Many of the students live out of the town on small hobby farms or on bush blocks. One student in the class lives on a 1000 acre farm. Some of the animals that are commonly seen in our district are koalas, wombats, echidnas, platypus, possums, sulfur-crested cockatoos and many other birds. Platypus and water rats have been seen swimming in the river right in the centre of the town.
We are looking forward to hearing from the other schools in the project and to sharing information about our streams.
