Final Report: December, 2002

Shanghai American School, 6th grade, Shanghai, China

We are sixth grade students attending school at Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China.

We are in Mrs. Moulton's science classes. We studied weather and then climate to learn why we experience the weather we do here in Shanghai.

We have looked at many maps and picked places randomly or that we were interested in to research. We found out average temperatures, highest and lowest temperatures, and average rainfall. We looked at many other factors as well. We used hand-held thermometers to take the temperature of our area every day at solar noon (even though that was during our lunch period). We used the Internet to find the sunrise and sunset times for each day. We used simple math to figure out the total minutes.

We know now and the data supported our hypothesis that latitude is the main factor in determining the climate of a place. We also discovered that ocean currents and being near a body of water have a major effect on climate. The topography of a place helps to determine the climate and that includes elevation. We understand that the angle of the sunrays onto a place impacts that place's seasons and temperatures. The areas that receive direct sunlight are generally hotter than those who receive the sunlight at an angle. We know why the climate zones are classified as they are.

Unfortunately, this project came later in the year than last year (according to our teacher) and we had to move onto another unit before getting the data and so on. Those of us who wanted to help write this report came in on our own to do it but it was fun. For kids like us who move around a lot, we find this kind of project meaningful.

Daylight vs. Temperature

Temperature vs. Latitude

We learned a lot and enjoyed using the computer to help us.
