Mr. Walmsley's Grade 5 class at G.R. Davis School on Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. We wanted to do this project to find out about the connection between location of a town or city and their temperature and average daylight hours. We first found out where Fort Macleod was located by finding our longitude and latitude. We kept track of our temperature, sunrise, and sunset for 5 days. We found our sunrise and sunset time on the Weather Network website and used a thermometer outside our classroom window for the temperature. At the end of the 5 days we averaged out the temperature and daylight hours and made a graph for our town. We submitted our information and then picked 9 other places and recorded their information. We then made 2 more graphs. One for average temp. and latitude and the other for daylight hours and latitude. We decided that the further south a place is the more sunlight hours they have. We also found that the father south a place is the warmer it is but the correlation was not as strong as on the sunlight graph. We learned a lot from this project. We learned where lots of different places were especially in the U.S.A. It was very interesting to see the differences in the daylight hours for each place. We think it would be neat to do this 4-6 times a year to really see the differences each place has in temperature and daylight hours compared to us.
