Global Sun Temperature Project FALL 2001 - FINAL REPORTS |

Junior High School in Puxico, Missouri, USA
Students in Mrs. Donner's 8th Grade Earth Science classes used the information posted in the checked data table to make two graphs. The first graph was titled "How Latitude Affects Minutes of Sunlight." The second graph was titled "How Latitude Affects Temperature."
Students learned that since the southern hemisphere was tilting toward the sun when this data was recorded, the latitudes closest to the South Pole had more minutes of daylight than those latitudes closer to the North Pole. They also saw that, in general, the closer a place was to the equator, the warmer its temperature. We learned that we could estimate the minutes of daylight that any city in the world would have had that week, just by knowing its latitude and using our graphs. My students are in my classroom during three periods in the mornings. One class is with me from 8:15-9:05 a.m., one from 9:15-10:00 a.m., and the other from 10:10-11:00 a.m. I was disappointed that none of my students could help me gather and record the data because of the time restrictions.
