Winthrop(44.314031N,69.973128W), a small business community of approximately 6,000, is located in central Maine about 10 miles southwest of Augusta. It is surrounded by a number of beautiful lakes and in its earliest days was known as Pond Town.

The population grows in summer as vacationers return to their summer lakeside cottages. However, there has been a tendency in recent years to convert many of these lakeside residences to year round homes.

Snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross country skiing are popular winter activities.

Winthrop was settled in 1760 and incorporated in 1771.

Winthrop Middle School has 276 students in grades6,7,and 8 and has been undergoing extensive renovations over the past year.

Hey Winthrop!
Thank you very much for the compliment! All 5 (4 girls and 1 boy ) of us wrote that letter and we appreciate it. So how are things in Winthrop, ME? Things are great here. We're glad to know that there are other Mainers doing this experiment as well.

Au revoir from the kids in room 105
