Hello from Shanghai American Middle School in Shanghai, China! Shanghai is a huge city with approximately 15 million people. We are located in a rural village in the Shanghai suburbs called Zhudi Town.

Shanghai is located 31:13:59N 121:27:00E. Our summers are typically long, hot, and humid. We can experience very high temperatures between April and October. Winters are short and cold with temperatures dipping below freezing. We almost never have snow though. It frequently rains and can be quite dreary. This year we have had the most glorious fall weather ever since I've been here (5 years). The late spring also brings lovely temperate weather.

We have over three hundred students in the middle school. Our total number of students from Pre-K 3's to 12th grade is well over 1200 students. We have a sister campus, pre-K-8th, on the other side of the city in Pudong. Our student body is made up of students from around the world. We have many Taiwanese and Hong Kong Chinese students, Koreans, and Europeans, as well as, American students. We follow an American curriculum. At our middle school, we have block scheduling with a Day 1, Day 2 pattern. The students participating in this project are in my four science classes and number sixty sixth grade students.

Dear Shanghai American Middle School,
My name is Larry Williams and I am from Birmingham, Alabama. I am huge sports fan and I was wondering what type of sports you play in Shanghai. If I ever decided to go to Shanghai what would you say would be the best place to visit? In Birmingham the best place to visit is Visionland Theme Park. Do you have a theme park in Shanghai?
Sincerely,
Larry

Dear Shanghai American Middle School,

Our class is very interested in what kind of a lunch program
you have there. Do you eat mostly Chinese foods? Our
favorite lunch foods are pizza, Italian Dunkers, Italian
sandwiches, fries, and meatball subs. What are the most
unusual foods in China?

How long each day do you stay in school? What time do
you start and end? How long is your school year?

Our class is also interested in how you feel about the
terrorism that is going on. We have many different feelings.
Sometimes we're sad, sometimes mad, a little scared,
also angry.

We hope you write back to share part of China's culture
with us.

Jay 5th graders

Hi! This is Emily and Susanna from Farmington,Missouri,USA.
We think it's neat that your schools have kids from all over the world. Our town is not so big, but it's developing. Any way,
our school has about 600 kids. About 100 are in the forth grade. Our teacher's name is Mrs. Alice Johnson. We have 23 kids in our class. How many kids in your class do you have?

Sincerely,

Susanna and Emily

Hi,

I'm from Shahala Middle school, and I was actually born in Beijing, China. I moved to America when I was 8. It's been almost 3 years since I've been there, and I'd like to know how China is changing.

Our school is actually brand new, and I'm in the 6th grade. We have P.E. everyday, and it's pretty fun. Since you follow a American curriculum, what classes do you have, and how is school over there?

Sincerely,

Kenny

Hello,
I am a student from Shahala Middle School.I was wondering how far is Shanghai from Beiging? I am asking because when I was five I went to Beiging to visit and see all the great places. Is it really populated in Shanghai? Where I live it is not that crowded, I don't exactly live in the country but I live in the suburbs of the city.In a way where you live is sort of like mine because it rains a lot here too. The state I live in is right underneath Canada and it is in the northwest part of the United States. I was wondering what do you think about the terroist attack that happened in New York? Even though we live all the way on the other side of the country it effects everybody here in a way. Our economy is not so good either. Please write back at the e-mail address above this letter.

Hi!

My name is Colby S. and I am a boy from Shahala Middle School in Vancouver, Washington, USA. I'm in Mrs. Drechsler's 6th grade EXCEL class. Our school is brand spanking new, so food or drink outside of the lunchroom is prohibited. Is your school like that? My school's mascot is the bald eagle and the school colors are metallic gold and black. Does your school have a mascot? I play the trumpet in band. Does your school have a band?

My hobbies include origami, reading, drawing, and PE. I've heard that origami is popular in China. Is it? Also, are there Redwall books in China? I recommend them to anyone.

Please e-mail me with answers to my questions if possible. I'm very curious.

The weather here from mid-September to around May is pretty wet and rainy. We barely have any snow here, which kind of stinks. The last time it snowed here was two years ago. From around June to the first part of September, the weather is sunny and desirable.

My class's e-mail: drechskids@hotmail.com pen pals maybe? :)

Sincerely, Colby

Hello,
I'm also from Shahala Middle School. After I read your letter, I was interested if you had any other students from other places around the world. I was also interested because you said you had students from Hong Kong, and my parents are both from Hong Kong (I'm Hong Kong Chinese). I was wondering what kinds of sports you have over there. Since you were based on a American curriculum, I was thinking you had football, basketball, or maybe even volleyball. We have those sports at my school, plus many more.

Hope I get to talk to you later,
Robin
