Greetings from sunny Ukiah, Oregon.
Ukiah school has 60 students from Ukiah and all over the world. There are 10-15 dormitory and exchange students that reside in our community every year. We have 6 teaching staff a librarian, a cook, a maintenance man and a superintendent. The 2000-2001 school year brought an exciting distinction to Ukiah. Norma Barber, a veteran teacher, was named the Oregon Teacher of the Year. We have an active student body, drama club, music instruction and a variety of other clubs. We have a four day week so our students can travel on Friday's to sporting events. Sports include: volleyball, soccer, basketball and track and field.
Ukiah is located at 45:08:02N and 118:99:54W. Ukiah is about 60 miles from the nearest large cities of Pendleton, Oregon and La Grande, Oregon. The population of Ukiah is about 250. Ukiah is nestled in the Blue Mountains near the Oregon Trail. The elevation is 3353 feet above sea level. The weather has four distinct seasons with winter being the longest and the summer growing season lasting about 6 weeks. Temperatures range from -10 in the winter to 90 in the summer. Rainfall averages 5-7 inches per year and snow can be on the ground from November to April. There is an abundance of mountains, timber, wild game (elk, deer, turkey).
People say there is nothing to do in Ukiah but watch the natural beauty!
The fifth grade class thought is would be exciting to participate in this project since our science has taken on an earth science theme for the year. We will end our year in outdoor school, build plant books, and do many other exciting projects.
Have a great time, project and year,
Anne Coote
3rd-5th grade teacher.

Hello from Jay,
I am one of the 5th graders in our 5th grade class.I would
like to ask you a few questions. Do you like your seasons
,or would you like it to be mainly one season? Our state
sounds the same as yours.I love having all four seasons
,because when you get tired of one of them there is always
another coming up.
What is your classes favorite subject? If you would like
take a vote then you can tell us in the letter. How long are
your school days? Ours are 6 hours long.
your friends,
Jay,ME
