Our school is located on the Redcliffe Peninsula, just north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Our reference is 27 28' S and 153 2' E. We are very luck to live near the beach and such spectacular islands. In most parts of Redcliffe we have beach front apartments looking over Moreton Bay and the islands: Moreton, North and South Stradbroke. In Kippa-Ring State School we have 560 students and undertake a variety of subjects such as art, maths, english, science and social studies. On every Friday, we play sport against other schools and the sports we play change due to the season. In winter we play rugby league, soccer and hockey while in summer we play cricket, tennis, netball and basketball. We do other activities such as fishing, dancing and archery. Many people have barbeques in summer. The cook out on the beach and in the parks. We also have a lagoon which is very popular on the very hot days. We have a computer lab at school where we study for assignments. It is very helpful. Recently, Brisbane held the Goodwill Games and some of our students went to see the athletics They had a great time. We have great facilities for sport on the peninsula. We have rugby league, soccer, hockey, softball, netball, cricket and basketball clubs. The season here is changing from winter to spring. Usually in summer we have very hot and humid days. It does not snow here in winter but it is still cold. We hope to hear from you all soon and look forward to doing the project.
A big hello from Down Under

Hi!
We have some questions for you. At our school, we are working as a "sister school" with Dakabin High School on a project that is going up on the shuttle to the International Space Station at the end of November. We know that Queensland is a pretty darn big place, but we also know that they're also close to Brisbane -- so are your two schools close together?
Also, you mentioned that you are in Year 7. At Dakabin, we are working with Year 10, and they seem to be about 14 and 15 years old. So is your class made up of 11 and 12 year olds? If so, you are just a little older than us. A lot of us are already 11, but many are still 10 years old.
Is it weird to think that some people are having winter when you are having summer? We always have cold weather and snow at Christmas, so it is really hard for us to imagine you spending the holidays at the beach. Just goes to prove that the world is really a big place!
Hope to hear from you!

Hi weather buddies
We don't call autumn fall, because most of your leaves stay on the trees all year round. We have very few deciduous trees in Queensland, which has a warm and moist climate. Our gum trees don't lose their leaves at all, so the koalas can feed all year round. It is spring now - but it is a very warm spring. We had 34 degrees celsius on Sunday - so that is warm. We are right on sea level - in fact the beach is about 1 km away. We would like to hear from you to discuss how weather affects the way you live and the things you do.
See ya

Gidday 5th Graders
Our class, 7A, has students ranging from eleven years to almost thirteen. In December we will complete primary school and start high school in February 2002.
Dakabin High School is located 16 km west of our school. Your project sounds interesting. Could you explain it to us because we are doing some study on space this term. We, too, have a sister school. Ours is called "Sue" and is located in Onada, Japan. We exchange artwork.
We do not find it weird to think of Christmas in winter as our television shows and many Christmas traditions are American. Some people spray fake snow on their Christmas tree and on the windows. What we would find hard to imagine is not being able to play outside in the sun with all of the toys that Santa brings. Christmas day is long and hot and some people forget the traditional roast turkey and have seafood or barbeques.
Although the world is a very big place, we'd love to hear from you again.
See ya

Dear Gippa-Ring School,
My name is Bud Sauer. I am from The Altamont School in Birmingham, Alabama. I have a few questions for you. What is your favorite sport? Our school's main sport is basketball. How long is your summer vacation? We have about 3 months. Does your school have a rugby team? Do you play soccer? We play soccer, but not any rugby. Do you ever watch American football? Football is really big here, but our school doesn't have a football team. Our class is looking forward to participating in this project with your school.
From,
Bud Sauer

What are some common pets that you have in your community? We have mostly cats and dogs.
It is fall here, and the leaves are falling. Are leaves falling where you live?
I hope you will write to us, in Chesapeake Middle School.

Great to hear from you and Gidday Mates
Yes, we love our footy in Australia. We have four major types of football: soccer, rugby league, rugby union and Australian Football. We play soccer and rugby league at our school. Some of the students have seen a game of grid iron - but they don't understand the rules. The game seems to go on for a long time and your players wear a lot of padding and helmets. Our players sometimes wear a soft, leather helmet to protect themselves, but they never wear crash helmets. Our weather is getting very warm, although it is only spring. Today our temperature was around 35 degrees. We have very hot and humid weather in summer and dry, mild temperatures in winter. We have never had snow in winter, although it snowed a couple of hundred kilometres away. We live at the beach, and have great views of the sandy islands in the bay. Write soon.
See ya later

Hello weather friends,
I'm from Shahala Middle School in Vancouver, WA. Today's weather was rainy and sunny. In the morning, it was rainy, and in the afternoon, it was sunny. I was wondering if the weather in Australia was getting sun or rain at the moment.

Robin

Hi Robin
Today our weather is very hot and humid. The humidity is over 70% and the temperature is around 35 degrees. It is only the middle of spring so our summer will be extremely hot. This means most of us will be in our pools every afternoon, or heading for the beach or lagoon. We live on the beach and have great views of the Glasshouse Mountains and the islands in the bay. Is it humid where you are? Do you get snow in winter? Do you go to school in the dark because of short days in winter? I would like to hear from you and all about how weather affects the things that you do.
All for now
