We are from C.E.S. (cottonwood elementary and there is
about 630 kids in our school.) There are three of us in Alps and
we are in third grade. Alps is the Advanced Learner Program. We
come once a week.
Cottonwood is in the Verde Valley. We are approximately
100 miles north of Phoenix so we are almost in the exact center
of the state. Our latitude and longitude is approx. 110 W long.
and 35 degree N latitude. We live on the Verde River. The old
ghost town of Jerome is five miles up the road on Mingus
Mountain. We live near Sedona which is famous for its beautiful
red rocks.
It has been very hot here since school started. It was 108
degrees F. one day and one week it stayed between 102 and 105
degrees F. Soon though, it will start to cool down and if we are
lucky, it will snow this winter. It if doesn't though. We can
drive up to Mingus Mountain or to Flagstaff to play in the snow.
Flagstaff is the BEST place because it has LOTS of snow and you
can throw snowballs, snowboard and ski, and make snowmen.
We are happy to be part of this big group of schools. We
hope to hear from some of you.
One of us plays football and one of us will play soccer
and one likes to play kickball--and we are all scientists!

Sincerely,

Your

Hello, 3 scientists! We are a group of 5th graders from
Jay, Maine (please see our letter of introduction if you haven't
already).

It's great that you can go someplace to play with snow.
It's even better that you can leave it when you choose!
We get a lot of snow in the winter and have no choice -
we're stuck with it! But we love it because we love
to ski, snowboard, snowmobile, and snowshoe! We
also like to make snowballs (although we're not allowed
to at school).

Please write back!

Hi 3 Scientists and welcome,

Our teacher used to live in Phoenix and visits Sedona all the time. Mrs. Tarzy brought in some oil paintings and photographs of the red rocks. She also showed us the tourist map with all the rock names like Coffee Pot Rock. Do they really look like that? We can sympathize with the heat - even though we are part of San Diego County we are inland and it can get really hot for us, that is. We start school in mid-August and it was 99+ for several days. But we can't complain too much but right now 72 feels cold! Looking forward to your results.
