Howdy everyone!

We are a Special Education class at Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway, California. There are 13 students in the class representing grades 6, 7, and 8. In our whole school there are about 1400 students. The school is about 40 years old and one of the oldest in Poway.

Poway started out as a little sleepy community where horses roamed the street. Now we have over 50,000 people but still are called "The City in the Country" because we have a lot of trees and open spaces. Poway is part of the north inland area of San Diego County at latitude 33 N and longitude 117 W. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the beaches near San Diego.

To commemorate the founding of Poway and the early pioneers who came to settle the land, the city has an annual event called Poway Days which is coming up later this month. There is a parade followed by a festival selling all kinds of home made crafts and delicious food like kettle corn and barbecue ribs.
The big event is the rodeo that brings riders from across the state.

People come to our area to vacation because the weather is usually mild and warm. Sometimes the weather reports can be boring, saying the same thing day after day - sunny with a high of 75. We do get some nasty weather if an El Nino storm kicks up bringing dry, hot winds. The winter is our rainy season. We are so used to the sun that when we get a few days of cloudy weather we get grumpy.

We are all looking forward to participating in this project and finding out about other places. Our class publishes the school
newspaper and will be reporting our progress.

Adios,

Room 9
Meadowbrook MS

Welcome Meadowbrook Middle School,

First and foremost, I would like to officially welcome you the Global Sun Temperature project Discussion Area. Secondly, I would like to share with you a special bond that I have with your school. Even though I currently live and work in Hoboken, NJ located on the East Coast, I actually attended your school when I was in middle school and lived in Rancho Bernardo. I still remember a Math teacher that I had whom I particularly liked, he used to have his students refer to him by his first name, Eddie although I do not remember his last name. He was an excellent teacher and also had a pilots license. Does he still teach there.

In any case, I look forward to your participation.

Dear Meadowbrook,
Hi, my name is Stephanie and I go to Kippa-Ring State School in Redcliffe Queensland Australia. At our School we have about 600 students, our school is also about 40 years old too.
Redcliffe started out when a couple of free settlers started clamming land and know we are a highly advanced place and a targeted spot for tourists. We are a part of the great southeast in Queensland. Our longitude is 27° 28’S and our latitude is 153° 2’E. We are really lucky because it only takes us about 3 minutes to get to the beach.
We have lots of parades celebrating and remembering Anzac Day. Do you have any special celebrations like Anzac Day? My favourite big event is the Eka, which is a big show with, hundreds of rides, show bags, fireworks, events and shows.
People come to our area because it gets extremely hot in summer and we have excellent conditions for swimming. How long does it take for the water to warm up over there?
I can’t really imagine what snow looks or feels like. Could you tell me?
Our whether is hot even in winter and the winds are so dry that you could choke.
What are your Christmases like?
Looking forward to your response.
Good by Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
Our teacher Mrs. Tarzy showed us where you are on the map -a long way from us. I'm Jennifer and I'm writing with my friend Melissa. We're excited that we started the temperatures today. Of course our weather has turned cloudy and cool and everyone was complaining because the sun wasn't out much. I didn't mind because we have to run cross country and it gets so hot and sweaty. How do we describe snow? Well, it's like taking an ice block and shaving little slivers off it - the snow is cold and wet. We have to travel about 40 minutes to get to snow. You are lucky to live so close to the beach. Have you ever had shaved ice or a snow cone (you grind up ice cubes and put flavored syrup on top). Mrs. Tarzy says that when we have winter you have summer. What do you do at Christmas or the winter holidays? Even though it doesn't snow here it's not beach weather. Really only in August is the water warm enough to go swimming but it still can be cold. A lot of times in June and July it's the tourists who go in - we prefer a heated pool. We have to go. Bye

Jennifer and Melissa

Dear Jennifer and Melissa,
We just got a bit of rain over here and it was a great relief too. We hadn’t had rain for a long time.
Yes we do have snow cones over here and they are really nice.
Our Christmas's are VERY HOT so we sometimes spend Christmas at the beach or with our family (ones that have a pool).
It reached 36 degrees Celsius the other day and the humidity was 72, were still in spring. We have had about 5 fires at or around Redcliffe so fare.
Gotta go know
Speak to you next time.
Stephanie
