8IN is a class of year 8 ( 12 year old) students at Diocesan School for Girls, in Auckland, New Zealand. Diocesan is a fairly large independent school, with 1400 students ranging from new entrants to senior ( year 13) girls. We are part of the Middle School, where there are five other year 8 classes. There are 28 girls in the class. The school’s web address is : www.diocesan.school.nz
Auckland is a geographically large city with a population in the greater Auckland area of over one million. It is located at 36o51’ South, 174o36’ East. Auckland is located on an isthmus between the Hauraki Gulf on the Pacific Ocean, and the Manukau Harbour, which empties into the Tasman sea, so the climate is fairly moderate. Our summer daytime temperatures are often in the mid to high 20’s (celsius), and in the winter while we occasionally have frosts, day time temperatures range between 12 and 16 degrees C.
Auckland is known as the “City of Sails”, and we are proud to be the host city for the America’s Cup defense. The city is built around numerous volcanic cones (hopefully extinct!), and extends for many kilometers north and south from the Auckland isthmus. Surrounding the city are farm lands to the north and south, and Regional Park land to the west.
We enjoy a host of sporting and recreational activities, including sailing, tramping (hiking) and winter skiing (a four hour drive south to Tongariro National Park). Rugby is the national game, but soccer, netball and hockey are popular too.
The class looks forward to participating in the Global Sun Temperature project.

Hi Kara.
My name is Helen. I go to Diocesan School in New Zealand. Yes we do have earthquakes but they are not very common and the last big one we had was something like 7-8.3 on the Richter Scale. That was about 50-60 years ago. That happened in Napier, in the North Island of New Zealand. We have classes of 28 at our school and our science teacher is called Mrs MacDonald and she is from America as well. Our principal is called Mrs Thompson and we don't see her all that much. Anyway, I hope that this e-mail has answered your question.
From Helen aka. Garfield.

Hello!
We are a class of 22 students at Livingston Junior High SChool in Livingston, Texas. We're in the seventh grade.
Livingston is a small town with a population maybe over 5,000 or 6,000. There is nothing really to our town. (You can find out more about us in our introductory letter.)
So, what kinds of things are your class doing? Our class is recording temperatures all week. We're also studying how the sun damages the skin. Well, we'ld like to hear more about your project and we hope to write back.

Hi, how are you, my name is Kathleen and i go to dio, in auckland, New Zealand, or Aotearoa. in science at the moment we are studying electricity, but our teacher Mrs Mac decided that we could do Global Sun anyway. Everyone in our class is really weird, but I suppose you get that too! Our class is the only class in New Zealand participating in Global Sun and we think that is quite cool.
