Greetings from sunny Arizona!
From our campus we can see cacti, mountains, and palm trees! Our 5th grade class has 26 students in a small, rural school located in Wittmann, Arizona. Wittmann is located about 30 miles northwest of Phoenix at 33:46:35N and 112:31:40W. We are situated in the Sonoran Desert. We have many canals for irrigation; some have been in the same place for hundreds of years! The original engineers were Hohokam Native Americans who did all the work using handtools and baskets. They have never been replaced because modern technology couldn't improve them.
Our school has approximately 500 students in grades Preschool-8. The school was named "Nada" for nothing in Spanish and "burg" for town in German. The person that named our school thought it was a very funny joke! Many of the original inhabitants of Wittmann were miners. They mined for copper and gold.
We have two seasons in AZ: summer and unsummer. The temperature reaches over 120 degrees F in the summer. Winter month can be cool; last night it was only 39 degrees F! That may not sound cold to some of you, but believe us WE feel cold.
We are looking forward to sharing this learning project with you.
Sincerely,
Ms. Gaghagen's Fabulous Fifth Graders
