We are a group of 8 fifth-graders from Normandy Elementary, a Blue Ribbon School in southwestern Ohio. Our school is located near Dayton, Ohio, in Centerville. We are near a valley on the edge of a large nature preserve. There are over 500 students at Normandy in grades 1 through 5. In our building, we have 21 classrooms, special classrooms, and tutors. We have a weather station where we take daily readings from our barograph, indoor and outdoor thermometers, an anemometer, wind vane, and rain gauge. We make weather announcements at the end of the day using the readings we have taken.
Our town, Centerville, is part of Washington Township, which was established in 1797 and named after George Washington, America's first president. People first came here because it was a good place to farm and the land is beautiful. Today, Centerville is a safe, quiet, open-space community with lots of services for its citizens. Our library was recently voted best in the USA and our school district is considered excellent. Centerville is a "bedroom" community because people who live here use the nearby freeways to travel to their jobs in Dayton, Cincinnati, and other cities nearby.
In the summer, our weather here can get very warm, with temperatures often in the 90-degree F. range, and sometimes close to 100 degrees F. Our winters can also be quite cold, with temperatures near or below 0 degrees. We get enough snow to get days off most winters! Tornadoes can occur in spring and fall so we keep our eyes on the skies. We look forward to comparing our readings with other schools' readings all over the world.
