We go to Port Neches Middle school in Port Neches, Texas U.S.A. Our teacher/student ratio is 1:23 in sixth grade, 1:22 in seventh grade, and 1:24 in eighth grade. Our school consists of 606 students, 35 classrooms, two computer labs, and 1 library.
Our city is located in the southeastern part of Texas, which is in the southern part of the United States. We are located near a body of water called the Gulf of Mexico. Port Neches has a moist subtropical climate.
The longitude and latitude of our city is 29°N59’, 93°W58’. Our average precipitation in the summer is 50-100 cm and in the winter it is 50-100 cm. Our average temperature in summer is 30-40 °C and in the winter is 0-25 °C.
We live in Port Neches once known as Grigsby’s Bluff in Jefferson County. It is located on Farm Road 366 and State Highway 347. Our area was formerly the site of an Atakapa Indian village. Thomas F. McKinnley claimed Port Neches (Grigsby’s Bluff) in 1830. Our economic base is mostly related to the refinery industry. Our school traditions are mostly related to sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball.
Port Neches, Texas celebrates New Years on December 31 through January 1. The weather is quite unpredictable as the temperature can range from being warm enough to wear shorts to being freezing cold. Unfortunately, it never seems to get cold enough to snow. Some of our traditions include: popping fireworks, watching the ball drop from Times Square in New York City, NY on TV, and listening to Auld Lang Syne ( http://pages.prodigy.net/dmundro/holiday.html) at midnight, to celebrate the ringing in of the New Year. Other traditions are eating cabbage as a symbol of wealth and black-eyed peas as a symbol of luck for the New Year. On New Year’s Eve people wear festive clothing and have a good time with party hats, streamers, and noisemakers. On New Year’s Day families usually gather to watch football games and make New Year’s resolutions.
One week in December, Port Neches, Texas has a unique and fun-filled tradition that is called “Christmas on the Neches.” During this week several events take place at Port Neches Park to celebrate the coming of Christmas. There are fireworks, carnival rides, bands playing a variety of live music, games for all ages, and food galore-- from traditional Bar-B-Q to the great taste of homemade Cajun food (http://www.scancat.com/recipes.html ). The big event, which is the boat parade, takes place when the boats that are decorated with Christmas lights and ornaments parade down the Neches River. The weather ranges from near freezing to quite warm, which is a major factor in the clothes that we wear. People usually wear comfortable attire, such as blue jeans, T-shirts, and sweat suits, depending on the weather.
We hope this has expanded our communication with your school and other schools around the world. We also hope that informing you on our school gives a better view on what’s going on in other parts of the world. We have enjoyed reading about your school and community and are grateful that you have taken the time to read about ours. We wish you the best of luck in the future.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Parks’ Eighth grade Science classes Port Neches Middle School
