Global Temperature Project

Letter of Introduction from Grade 5/6A at Lara Primary School, Lara, Victoria, Australia.

Posted by Marcia O'Brien on Wednesday, 8 November 19100, at 11:57 p.m.

Hello Friends, We're contacting you from Lara in Victoria, Australia and we're a class of 31 eleven and twelve year olds in grades 5 and 6. We live 'down under' in the Southern part of Australia and Victoria and are located at 38.01° longitude and 144.25° latitude. Our town has approximately 8,000 people and is situated between the two largest cities in our state which are named Melbourne and Geelong. Many people who live here commute to these cities daily for their work. The first European to come to Lara was Matthew Flinders in 1802. He viewed the town from the top of local hills/mountains called the You Yangs. After him came Hume and Hovell in 1824. Before Europeans came to Lara aboriginal people lived here. The name Lara is actually an aboriginal word meaning "hut on stony ground." Our school is built on 20 acres and it has 455 students and 20 classes. At school we play footy (Aussie Rules), cricket, newcomb, tee-ball, netball and soccer. The Geelong football team which most of us barrack for is called The Cats. The Cats play in the Australian Football League and they're pretty good. We're looking forward to participating in this project. Regards, Grade 5/6A Lara Primary School.
