Our class decided to compare our data with the data from the SullivanSchool in Japan. These are the living animals that both schools
observed.
We both saw red and black ants and flying bugs. At our school we heard
birds. At their school they saw a pigeon.
We saw some animals that they didn't see. We saw caterpillars, yellow
jackets and we heard tree frogs.
They saw some animals that we didn't see. They saw snails, yellow
butterflies, brown moths, spiders, roly-poly bugs and dead worms.
Both schools observed grass, weeds and trees. Nancy Creek observed
mushrooms, elephant ears, red flowers and berries. Sullivan School
observed bamboo, a piece of cactus, vines, moss, clover, a mint bush, and roots.
Both schools saw dirt. Only Nancy Creek saw pine straw that is used to
mulch our garden so the water will stay in the soil. The Sullivan
School saw big and little rocks, plastic, mud, metal, bricks, a spider web, a
nest in a tree and a pond with a statue of a frog.
We have learned to observe. It was not too difficult to sit still for 30
minutes. If we do this again next year we would like to do it in a
different place so we can observe different things. We might dig up a
square to see what is under the ground. Perhaps next year our
observations could include more detail and measurement.
Japan is thousands of miles away from us, but we are almost the same
distance from the equator. Our latitudes are very similar. The
Sullivan School is very close to the Pacific Ocean, and we are hundred of miles
away from an ocean.
