Greenville Elementary School, Scarsdale, New York
Our school, Greenville Elementary (K6), is located in Scarsdale, a suburb about 20 miles north of New York City. As you can see in
our name (Scars"dale"), our location is one with "dales." Many of our
street names end in "dale," ... Ferndale, Glendale, etc. These
dales (low valleys, with nearby small hills), and the very large rocks
in the area, are remains from the Ice Age!
Our class has greatly enjoyed reading the data letters from ALL the
groups which responded. We decided to compare our square findings with
all of the Arizona schools (Thanks, Walker Butte, W.F. Killip Elem.,
Copper Basin K-8, and Wilson K-8!)
Animal similarities: spiders, beetles, worms, fireflies, bees.
Animals differences: We did not have snails, lizards (!), sand fleas
and a certain "blister beetle," (ouch!)
Plant similarities: weeds, grass, trees.
Plant differences: We did not have cacti (We liked the sound of "barrel cactus!"), brittle bush, cotton
plant, or desert lupines.
Non-living similarities: big rocks, plastic, mud, dirt, small rocks.
Non-living differences: We did not have a rat hole, paper, lava
rock, and sand.
Our conclusions: We concluded that our soils and climates are
different. Cacti doesn't grow here in NY, or desert lupines! (sandy
soil.) We think our community probably appears "greener" than the
desert area we're imagining in AZ. We have more rain, allowing more
green plants to grow.
