In our square we saw lots of different bugs and insects. We found a lot of earthworms and insect larvae. We also found slugs. We saw an earwig, it was brown with a little red on the back. We saw different types of caterpillars. One was a wooly bear which was brown and black and fuzzy. We also saw a Virginian Ctenucha caterpillar. We had to look that caterpillar up on the internet, it was fuzzy light green with a row of black down the back. This was not something we had seen before. We also saw a stinkbug, it was dark gold and green. We found a praying mantis. We saw a ladybug and a dragonfly. We saw some spiders, we think that one was a goldenrod spider and one was a grass spider. We saw a garter snake.

Most of the squares had either dogwood or honeysuckle bushes in them. Some of them had chokeberry shrubs. One square had a large ash tree sapling. Most squares had at least one little ash tree seedling. One square had a small Eastern Red Cedar. A lot of the trees had grapevines wrapped around the tree, trying to get to the sun! All the squares had tall grass in them because this area used to be a pasture for animals. We found a lot of wildflowers; goldenrod that had gone to seed, Queen Anne's lace, yellow coneflowers and purple asters. Almost all the petals of the flowers had fallen off because the plant had gone to seed. We also found burdocks, dandelions and milkweed.

We found a skin of a praying mantis that had molted. We found an empty snail shell and on the ground, there were lots of fallen leaves from the trees. We found seeds from milkweed. There were some other hitchhiking seeds as well. The soil was dark brown and very moist. It was very hard to dig, it was compacted, with only a few very small rocks in it. It felt like clay. We did not find any litter!
