LESSON #2: Where on earth are you?

Objective : To find out where your ship is located and where it was has been over the past several hours.

Part One: Locating your ship
  1. Take out Handout #2 (click on the link above to print out a copy of the handout if needed)
  2. Get the Ship ID Code and the ship map you should be using from your teacher and record it on Handout #2.
  3. Follow the link to the Pacific Ocean Ship Map , Atlantic Ocean Ship Map , European Ship Map, or Asian Ship Map, depending on what your teacher told you, and see if you can locate your ship using the ID Code.  Stay on the Ocean Ship Map page and go on to Part Two.
Part Two: Accessing data from your ship
  1. Take out Handout #2
  2. Go to the top right of your Ocean Ship map and click on the link to  "observation table."
  3. Scroll down on the table to find the ID code of your ship. Note that both buoys and ships are listed on this table.
  4. If you cannot find your ship ID code on the table, go to Sailwx.info and type the ship's call letters or numbers in the box
    labeled "Search for one ship by call sign."
  5. You may also use information from  the NDBC Ship Observations Report .  Click on the drop-down menu to select data from past 12 hours.
  6. Follow the instructions on the handout and record the necessary data.
