Think about the questions below and record your reflections in your project
journal. After writing, discuss your ideas with the class.
How do earthquakes affect the lives of people living in the communities
in which they happen?
How can the people of a (local/national/global) community respond to the
challenges earthquakes pose?
Read 2 or 3 personal accounts from individuals who have experienced an
earthquake. Accounts can be found at the following links or from
material provided by your teacher.
Pinpoint the locations of the earthquakes on a class map.
Using information from the accounts, identify ways in which people are
affected by the earthquake as well as ways in which members of a community
respond to an earthquake. Record this information in a journal.
Create a list of class responses for each of the questions above. Are there
other ways in which earthquakes affect people that are not mentioned in
the accounts? Are there additional ways in which members of a community
could respond?
As a homework assignment, gather more information to answer the two questions.
You may interview neighbors or relatives who have lived through an earthquake.
Also, consult phone books and community resource guides to identify the
names of agencies and organizations that offer relief to those affected
by natural disasters. Record this new information in your journal.
