Design Your Own "Oscar"

The Oscar is a trophy that has been awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences every spring since 1929. Academy Awards are given for achievements in the film industry in 20 categories including  Best Picture,  Best Actor,  and Best Director. The Oscar  is a gold-plated statue of a  knight gripping a sword and standing on a reel of film. No one is quite sure why the statue was named "Oscar", but most people say that the director of the Academy named it after her uncle who looked like the knight.

Activity:

Pretend that you have just been appointed as the student representative to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. You have been put in charge of designing an award trophy for this year's movie that was most popular with a particular age group. For example, you might create an award for the Best Action Film for Middle School Students or the Best Cartoon for Students in Grades 3-5.

  • Write a description of your trophy. Is it a human, an animal, or an inanimate object? Include size, material, color, and details about the figure itself. Be specific.
  • Give your award a name. Explain the significance of the name and why you chose it.
  • Write a persuasive letter to the Academy Awards Committee giving the reasons why your model should be selected for presentation.
  • Ask a friend to draw a picture of your trophy from the description that you wrote.
