The Amistad Journey

The Amistad Revolt occurred July 2, 1839 on a slave ship in the Atlantic Ocean.  After the revolt, the slaves unaware of their position in the North Atlantic, got caught in the Gulf Stream which took there journey up the North American coastline.  The slaves were captured and arrested just north of the Long Island Sound where they stood trial in Connecticut for piracy and murder.  The famous Amistad trial brought to the forefront a nationwide debate over slavery and slave trade.

 Your Challenge......Your Challenge......Your Challenge.....

Roger S. Baldwin, lawyer representing the Africans, has set out on the task of interviewing each one of his clients.  It is necessary for Mr. Baldwin to prove to the court that the Africans had been illegally kidnapped and enslaved.  This is an opportunity for you, one of the Africans captured and jailed from the Amistad, to state your case.

  • In the FIRST PERSON, write a description about your journey that would help explain to the court how you arrived in the United States.  In many cases limited information is known about particular slaves, your challenge is to be able to create reasonable situations for the person you have chosen.  Your essay is not a listing of facts, but instead is a creative writing opportunity through which you may have the chance to experience this amazing journey.
