Final Report of the Enrichment group, Stirling Primary School, S.A.
Completion of project We were able to complete the project, in a period of two months coming 1 hour once a week. It took us only two months because we worked as a team throughout the project. It also helped to have a teacher to explain everything to us properly. Daniel Gr. 7B
What we have learned There are quite a few things that are new to us and that we have learned about. We have learned new things like your eyes are blue or you have a white forelock because your parents carry the genes for it and it’s not from anything else like eating a lot of meat. The words “genetics, dominant and recessive” are also very new to us. Michael Gr.7wh
Suggestions If we had the chance to do the project again we would make the survey group bigger and use more characteristics. Suggestion to the group leader: Please give us more characteristics to work with. Euguen Gr.6M
Analyzing Data There are 10 students in our group. Our teacher made a printout of the survey data for each student. Each student had to analyze a different aspect. The results were then discussed in the group. By Mitchum Gr. 6D
Survey results: By Robyn, grade 6 Most of the schools that come from the USA have children in them that are colour blind. Why, out of all the schools in this project, did the colour blindness go with the Americans? Does America have a family that had colour blindness and as the family got bigger the colour blindness genes were just carried through all the time? School Percentage Colour Blindness West Bloomfield High School 1,8% Do have(1,8%) Middlesex High School 0,2% do have St. Mary’s Middle School 0,08% do have Collierville Middle School 0,2% do have Prano Massioto Secondary School, Lithuania 0% don’t have colour blindness Hayfield Secondary School 0.25% do have Jefferson Middle School 0,03% do have Irving Robbins Middle School 0,06% do have
From the survey data: by Louette, GR7 I started off by choosing at random, one school from each country. I converted the totals of each characteristic from each school to a percentage and then compared the results and I found out some interesting facts...
I will mention only the highest totals
FROM TOTAL CHARACTERISTIC St Pauls School 32% att.Earlobes Taipei Amrican School 73% with w/Forlock Prano Masioto Secondry School 43% with Dimples Stirling Primary School 64% curved Thumb Stirling Primary School 61% bent Pinky Olmsted Falls High School 78% w/o Mid-Digit Hair Prano Masioto Secondary School 100% no Colour Blindness
Most students in our group didn’t know about the white forelock. I compared the data relating to the white forelock of the following schools:
“WITH WHITE FORLOCK” SCHOOL TOTAL St Urula’s College 0% West Bloemfield High School 14% Middlesex High School 21% Oakwood Intermediate 1% Hellgate Middle School 0% Del Mar Middle School 0% ADM Middle 31% Taipei American School 0% Guntown Middle School 43% The Latin School Of Chicago 0% Passaic High School 55%
In South Africa a white forelock is very rare. It would be very interesting to know why it is so common and in places over 50% of the people do have a white forelock.
Total Percentages of the Genetics Survey, Lois, Gr 7 Of all the earlobes that were investigated around the world, 66,01% were free earlobes while 33,99% were attached. The white forelock investigation came to a result of 19,73% of the people having it and 80,17% not. 43,07% of the people had dimples, but 58,63% didn’t. 50,55% of all the thumbs that were checked were straight and 50,52% were curved. 59,97% of the people had straight pinkies, while 40,30% had bent little fingers. The mid-digital hair survey had a total of 44,58% people having it and 55,43% did not have the tiny hairs. The last investigation we did was the colour blindness investigation. That came to a result of 4,6% being colour blind and 95,52% were not.
Therefore, the following characteristics must be dominant:
free earlobes non-existance of white forelock straight thumbs straight
pinkies non-existance of mid-digital hair no colour blindness
The Genetics Project is maintained with WebBBS 2.14.
