This project was enjoyable because it was a group effort on the part of the class, not the teacher doing all the work. The project teaches the students to gather data, compile the data, and send data to a web site. A lot was learned about genetics and was a great review about genetic traits for those who have previous knowledge in this area. It was interesting to see which dominant and recessive traits stand out. The students really enjoyed the discussion area, where they could talk to other project participants or the project leader. One area in which the students really enjoyed was the red-green color blindness testing. The students made their own testing card from a link in the reference section. The links gave possible reasons and outcomes of red-green color blindness and touched on blue-yellow color blindness. They really enjoyed surveying others. Having other schools from around the world participating on the same project gave the students a feeling of importance. This made the validity of the project seem important to the students. The more the students use the internet the more they learn about a variety of information, not just the subject of research. There is a vast amount of research material provided in the links. Through this information the teacher can take the general genetics lesson to greater depths.
Compiling the data was difficult. The more participants, the more difficult it is to compile the data into a final chart. We had to cross reference to make sure that everyone surveyed was on the final data information sheet only once. Again, the more participants, the more difficult this task is. This was the only difficulty we encountered.
Thank you for allowing us to participate in our first on-line collaborative
project!
