Final Report from Hayfield Secondary School
We enjoyed analyzing the data very much. By using the spreadsheet we were able to compare the group data to our own individual data. Overall the percentages were very similar to our own
We were surprised to discover that very few of the genetic traits were straight dominance (reflecting a 3:1 ratio). The closest trait to that one was earlobes. The other that came close to that ratio was the pinky shape.
Several of the traits were about 50-50 which tells us that most people are either heterozygous or recessive. Traits showing this pattern were thumbs and mid digital hair.
There were very few white forelocks and colorblind individuals. We were surprised by the forelock since there would be no evolutionary pressure to reduce this trait unless that pressure was sexual selection.
Difficulties we had included explaining the traits to others so they could report their phenotype. If we were to do it again we would make diagrams to show what each trait would appear like.
We did not have the opportunity to look at the data for colorblindness
since we have been engaged in statewide end of course testing. We would
like to look at that later in the year.
