Charles J. Riley #9 is an inner city school serving a diverse ethnic, cultural and religious population. We are located in Paterson, Passaic County about 20 miles from New York City. The elevation of CJR #9 is 121 feet above sea level. Our coordinates are 40 degrees, 54 minutes North and 74 degrees and 9 minutes West.
CJR #9 is recognized as one of the most open and innovative schools in the district with a population of over 1200 students of mostly Hispanic, Arabic, Turkish decent. There are some African American students as well as other ethnic groups from countries such as Bangladesh and parts of Russia. Over 16 different languages are spoken in our student’s homes. CJR 9 prides itself on recognizing the many holidays celebrated by its students.
In an effort to improve and reinvigorate our curriculum we were selected
by the Superintendent to be a Theme School beginning in 1999. Our school
is collaborating with the Manhattan Institute to improve its internal culture
and provide a sense of ownership for teachers, students, and parents alike.
A fifteen-member committee has been meeting to lead our school on its journey
to becoming a successful theme school. Our theme for grades 6-8 is the
United Nations Model. Students receive instruction in interdisciplinary
units and are actively participating in Internet Projects. A part of their
study of genetics the seventh graders will be involved in this Human Genetic
Survey to identify dominant traits. Mrs.Tarant will teach the science aspects,
Ms. Warren will teach math concepts and Mrs. O’Rourke will assist with
the technology components of the project.
The Genetics Project is maintained with WebBBS 2.14.
