Gilmer High School in Ellijay, Georgia, USA

Greetings from the southern United States! Cool
We, the students of Gilmer High School, in Ellijay, Georgia, live in an area with an interesting history. Ellijay, whose name means “Earth Green There” in Cherokee, was established in 1832. We’re the Apple Capital of Georgia, and the Tour de Georgia runs through the town. Also, the largest gold nugget found in the Georgia Gold Rush was found here in Ellijay. We host the Apple Festival on the first and second weekends in October.

We are at the base of the Appalachian Mountains, with the elevation of the town at 1453 feet. Our Latitude and Longitude are 34°N and 84°W. There’s a population of 30,000 plus people in Gilmer County. Gilmer High School’s mascot is the Bobcat, and the colors are purple and white! We are the proud sponsors of an award winning band and a state dual champion wrestling team.

Our hypothesis is that not all “dominant” traits are dominant. Our estimates are that 85% of those tested will have free ear lobes, the dominant trait. 5% will have a white forelock, although this is a dominant trait. About 60% will have dimples. 80% will have straight thumbs. 55% will have straight pinkies. About 15% will have mid-digit hair, although dominant. Less than 10% will be colorblind.

Our goals are to:
1. Prove or disprove our hypothesis.
2. See how our data compares to data worldwide
3. Confirm dominance.

Mrs. Shawler's 3rd Block Biology Class (The Biology Bobcats!) Very HappyVery Happy Very Happy Bobcat Biology Final Report

We enjoyed doing this project. It was fun doing what "real" scientists do. Because of time constraints, we were unable to do family history for color blindness. All other sections of data were available.

We chose a random sample of 3rd block classes and so were able to survey over 180 students. Once the verified data was in, we divided into two groups; the writers and the math group. The writers worked together to answer questions for the final write up. The math group examined the data to find the percentage of each trait in the data set given. Then, we came together as a group for the final write up.

We learned that the dominant trait is not always most prevalent. We also learned that doing a project like this is a lot of work, going from start to finish. Another thing we learned was that the trait prevalence was roughly the same world wide. This was evidence for common decent among humans since these traits would be caused by our DNA.

The results were surprising. We did prove our hypothesis, that the dominant trait is not always most prevalent, but our precentages were off and our idea of dominance for dimples and pinkies was incorrect. We found that white forelock, although dominant, is definitely not the most prevelant. We also learned that colorblindness is fairly rare, at least based on the data we had to go by. We also confirmed that colorblindness is a recessively inherited trait.

Going on, based on our findings, many traits are flip-flopping from dominant to recessive. If one asks the question, are humans evolving, we think this is proof that they are...some day traits like white forelock will perhaps be recessive.

If we could do this project again, we would do a few things different. We would try to make time to do the family history of colorblindness. We would also make sure to show students the colorblindness chart separately so that students could not hear what others students were saying. Finally, we would make sure we knew exactly what to look for with a particular trait.

If we could give suggestions to the project leader, we would ask for more time between data collection and final write up. We would also like to see more traits, including genetic disorders if possible. Finally, we would recommend a minimum number of students to interview. Some groups only had 7 individuals surveyed while others had over 200.

The Clermont School in Bogota, Columbia

Hi,we are students from THE CLERMONT SCHOOL , an English, Spanish and French school which is located in Bogota Colombia, Latin America. We would like to be part of this project for the reason of this is a way to explore the world of internet and making research between long distances. Also is a way to allow students' new learning.
Human genetic project have a lot of purposes, one of them is to observe the differences of anwers and the tipe of letter the persons of the same age or of the same average of age make, is the heredity and variation of minds of people of the same age, it also includes a lot of the information of the person how he answer if it is tall, black or white, it is denmostrated with different codes that million of balls code have.

It is a multilingual school that is part of the UCB (union of bilingual schools) and has been functioning for about 25 years, the school is for both boys and girls. It is multilingual because apart from teaching us english since pre-kinder, we start to see french on eight grade. The school has had many locations, the last one was finished last year, it is located on carrera 73 # 213A-51 of Bogota D.C, Colombia.

On the new location we have: 3 two-story buildings, 2 outside basketball courts, 1 soccer court, 2 volleyball courts, a horse back-riding zone, 1 tennis court, 4 golf cages, a preschool zone with 1 park, 2 laboratories, and a 2 story building that has: offices, enfermary, fotocopies, highschool teachers room, and the admition's room. We also have a brand new coliseum that is used to play basketball and volleyball.

The school teaches music, art, dancing and corporal expression.
We also have soccer, basketball and volleyball teams which most of tha times make a very good impression, in fact last year we won a volleyball second place, and a first place on the soccer team, both on the girls varsity.

The Clermont school educates and train beings with a conscience universal ethic, committed with the knowledge and personal development, fully trained to function competently in the personal aspect, vocational and social development, so that his being and his contribution to make them welfare and happiness themselves , their families and their society.

The founders of the college have a mission to accomplish and why they seek people able to engage fully with the educational ideal that they have forged. Let's see what this vision of education, this philosophy that gives meaning to the College Bilingual Clermont, its objectives, its programs and its administration in general.

Design education
We are not mere transmitters of knowledge; This is preferable to a video or a good multimedia program. It is not only promote large intellectuals, because then, what we would do with the children of great potential manuals or idealistic poets and dreamers. Nor is it only create technical ability to manage or develop technology, where it would leave artists, the taste for a good concert or the beauty embodied in a shroud. Education is drawn, "steer away from." We then draw from the deepest interests of the child, values and skills, helping to transform known and constructively in the world which has been born, bringing to gradually expand its field of consciousness, driving with unlimited. Observers need to be nimble, to become insightful, find the hidden potential in our students and encourage that develop to the fullest. Our role is not to teach; Preparation is ably situations or environments appropriate to facilitate children's learning.
Hey i'am cesar angel i study in the clermont school an school of bogota (colombia) is bilingual that was founded in 1982 here we see the most of our classes totally in english we have great califications in the icfes an exam that is made here for entering the college we are in a group of bilingual schools called UCB where we share knowings and we make sport the clermont is a private school ubicated at the end of bogota we learn also some french but from an especific grade we dont see it before we get to 8 but we learn better the english we have a great level in sports in the UCB.

Asuncion National High School in Davao del Norte, Philippines

Hello and MABUHAY !

We are the second year students of class II-Narra of the Asuncion National High School in Davao del Norte, Philippines. There are 12 boys and 28 girls in the class. We are glad to participate in this collaborative project.

Although we concentrate on our academic subjects, we also love doing community outreach projects. We do "Linis Bayan" or community cleaning. In fact, our school is always a winner of the "Clean and Green" Program. Our school is tagged as the "School Inside A Garden". We have a mini-forest that provides us with clean fresh air.

We also excel in academic contests like science and math quiz bee. In fact, one of our classmates, Jael, will compete in the regional science quiz. If she wins, she will then compete in the National level.

This week, we are having practice of our field demonstration as part of our incoming Intramurals.

We already conducted survey of the traits and we enjoyed doing that. It's such a great activity and we learned a lot from it.

Nagmamahal,

II - Narra students

Aanestad Homelearners in Ladysmith, British Columbia, Canada

Greetings!

We are a homelearning family- two kids and Mom and Dad. Mom is our “teacher”. Our ages are 10 and 11 years and we are in grades 5 and 6. We live in Ladysmith, British Columbia which is on Vancouver Island just off the west coast of Canada. We are at 48.9882 latitude and 123.808 longitude. The area in which we live is classified as a temperate rain forest,
which means it rains a lot in the winter and it never gets super cold, although some years it will snow but it usually doesn’t stay too long. It doesn’t rain very much in the summer and actually gets very dry….we have fire bans in effect pretty much all summer long. The town of Ladysmith was founded in 1899 as a mining town. Fishing and logging are local industries. Tourism is big in this area….people come from everywhere to visit. Maybe you will too someday!
