Down the Drain I have learned a lot about water in the Down the Drain project. In this project I made a hypothesis(an educated guess). My hypothesis was: people in dry places use more water than people that live by oceans. I made this hypothesis by thinking if you were in a hot desert you would need water after about an hour. But if you were in a place where you are near an ocean you can go about a day without getting dehydrated. After I did some research about water, I figured out that my hypothesis was correct. People who live near bodies of water use less water than people that livi in places like Arizona. While doing this project, I also had to make a prediction. My prediction was that Mr. Moss’ class would use more water in week than any classes in places like California and New Jersey because they are by the ocean and we are in the desert. After looking for a long time for someone to communicate my results I figured out that my prediction was also correct. People who live in New Jersey use less water than people that live in Arizona because it is a lot drier in Arizona than it is in New Jersey. I also learned a lot of other interesting facts about water while doing this project. I learned that most of the U.S. freshwater is used for irrigation(38 percent) and thermoelectric power(38 percent). Another cool thing that I learned is that the Latitude of Tucson is 32.32917 and the longitude is 110.98459. The latitude and longitude help you find place on a globe. The experiment that I did in this project was I did a water consumption to see how much water I used in a week. In a week I used 1042 gallons of water. That means I used an average of 149 gallons per day(564 liters). Before I did this project I would have thought that this was a lot of water. Now that I figured out about the water cycle, I know that I won’t be wasting any water because water keeps on getting recycled. I really like doing this Down the Drain project. I really learned a lot about water that I never would of guessed. For example, I figured out that I could be drinking the same water that Abe Lincoln or George Washington once drank! I am very glad that I decided to participate in the Down the Drain project. I encourage everyone to go to the Down the Drain website and learn a little about water. |
