Field Notes from Ms. Matas’s 2nd Grade: Our class went pond dipping at Seven Ponds Nature Center and in our school’s nature center. We found lots of invertebrates. In our school pond, we found about 15 snails, one mayfly nymph, 2 boatmen, and a sideswimmer. At Seven Ponds, we found about 100 sideswimmers, 2 threadworms, and about 72 snails. We found 2 bristle worms, and 3 water mites. We found 3 tiny boatmen. Our class found lots of mosquito larva. We found 1 damselfly larva and 1 dragonfly nymph, a caddis fly, and a water scorpion. We had a really good time pond dipping. Our class hypothesizes that we will all find some of the same macro-invertebrates because we think that ponds have some properties that are the same all over, but we also think there will be some different critters because we all live in different climates.
