Air Pollution: What's the Solution?
         
   TEACHERS: What are the Effects of Air Pollution?

Objectives
Students will:
  • describe effects of acid on vegetation and other materials
  • describe effect of particulates on visibility
  • describe what happens to airways during an asthma attack
  • name several asthma triggers

Materials
  • computers with Internet access
  • projector or printed pictures
  • water with a pH of 7.0
  • soil
  • spray bottles
  • 100 ml graduated cylinders
  • 500 ml beakers
  • a solution with a pH of 4.0 (vinegar)
  • pH test kits, paper or probes to test water and soil
  • fresh picked leaves
  • chalk
  • 2 quart mixing bowls
  • vinegar
  • copies of Student Worksheets

Note to Teacher:
The classroom may be set up to suit your students' needs, materials and time limitations. All experiments may be set up and students rotate through all, or select a few experiments to set up and students rotate through all, or students break into groups and complete one experiment and report back to the class about their experience and information learned from the experiment.
